Album Title: Those Who Wait Artist: The Will Collier Septet Catalogue no: F-IRECD46 Date of Release: 11/07/2011 Price: 9.99 GBP
“Another cracking album” – Colin Towns “Collier is a fine composer” – Kenny Wheeler The Will Collier septet have been playing together for 6 years, during which time they have evolved and grown into a formidable unit. The music is often heavily complex; through-composed compositions, which seamlessly morph into extended improvisations. On the other hand some songs are a collection of the simplest most beautiful hypnotic melodies. Either way the end result is always musical clarity and completeness. These musicians are the closest of friends, they learned their trade together and you can hear their mutual respect and enjoyment of each other’s playing. The music is contrapuntal with a surprising array of textures. It involves odd time signatures, modern dance grooves and folk type themes often apparently evoking non jazz melodies inspired by the likes of Bjork, Radiohead, Nick Drake.
The band released their debut album in 2008 on F-IRE, one of the most respected labels in UK “post-jazz”. And despite being hailed as “A beautiful work” by jazz legend Kenny Wheeler, and “a forward looking vision of music” by British composer Colin Towns, a four star Jazzwise review and two successful UK tours; commercial success and a wider recognition has, as yet eluded them. Album number two has arrived.
