The band has been together since 2004 and has since developed a very distinctive sound where every band member has a strong and individual voice. This band brings together five outstanding musicians who have each independently made their mark on the vibrant young British jazz scene. Tom Arthurs (trumpet) and Ingrid Laubrock (tenor saxophone) are both key members of the F-IRE collective and are best known for running their own award-winning bands with numerous releases on the F-IRE label. Together they form one of the most celebrated horn sections in contemporary British jazz. Tom Mason (bass) has toured internationally with an eclectic array of artists, including Robin Eubanks, Robert Mitchell, Micheal Cain, Marty Ehrlich and Gerard Presencer. Drummer Dave Smith brings his interest in the 'Wolof' drumming tradition of Senegal to a music drawing its influences as much from the downtown New York scene than any sound that grooves. Having performed with musicians of the calibre of Stan Sultzman, Peter King, Liam Noble and Arnie Somogyi, his powerful groove completes this stellar line-up of musicians.
Since 2004 the Jonathan Bratoëff Quintet has performed at the Vortex, the F-IRE Festival in Hyde Park and various venues around London
