Robert Mitchell is an amazingly versatile pianist and composer, equally at home performing with a quintet in a concert hall as playing with a beat boxer as part of a club night. Indeed his own group Panacea works equally well - with a few changes in material - in a concert setting as well as in a club setting. It is tempting to compare Robert with Steve Coleman, the saxophonist who began the M-Base group of musicians and who has a major influence on the development of contemporary jazz. But Robert is a very different person and his music very distinctive. He was a key member of J-Life which was a very successful band in the 1990s. His own group Panacea combines very intricate and intelligent writing and a strong solos from Tom Mason plus vocals from Deborah Jordan. The music involves intense challenges in rhythmic and harmonic areas, with the feels coming from the fusion, romantic classical, and experimental worlds. The last album features songs with contemporary jazz, classical and electronic influences.

Panacea has been invited to play a live Session Broadcasted by Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio1 in March 2006 and performed at North Sea Jazz Festival, The Netherlands in July 2006.

The band was nominated for Session Of The Year (2006 Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards).

Press
"A young UK virtuoso of McCoy Tyner – like precision, excitement, boldness, and scope. Formidable improvising skills, remarkable breadth and absorbing unpredictability."
Jazz CD of the Week

"Mitchell's debut album is one of the most original, well crafted jazz statements of recent years. Mitchell's playing, composing and arranging abilities are all showcased. The use of voice and, often very subtly, percussion further expands the musical palette. This is one of Britains finest jazz piano albums."
Jon Opstad, Varsity, Cambridge Uni Magazine

"Robert, if you didn't know, is a mindblowingly good piano player. His compositions are intricate to the extreme, and he has a reputation for providing his fellow musicians with some of the most challenging music available."
