FULBORN TEVERSHAM

Fulborn Teversham are the mindblowing new group of Seb Rochford that pursue a more eclectic, and less overtly jazz direction than Polar Bear incorporating elements of electronica, Bablicon/Henry Cow-style prog and post punk. Polar Bear (the other band led by Sebastian Rochford) have released two albums on Babel and toured extensively throughout the UK, Europe and Russia. 

Their second album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Fulborn Teversham consists of Pete Wareham who is leader of Acoustic Ladyland, Nick Ramm who has played with many people including Matthew Herbert and Alice Grant who is relatively new to the London music scene. Alice Grant also sings with Leafcutter John, appears on Acoustic Ladyland's new album (released on v2) and has her own band Normal Gimbel which is an avant-garde song based accapella duo with Ruth Goller. Fulborn Teversham plays from quiet to loud, fast to very slow, bouncy to plodding and sing songs about friends and non-friends. Love and no love.

FINN PETERS QUINTET

Finn's quintet brings together kindred spirits with similar contemporary popular sub-cultural, improvisation and global music influences. They include members of the eclectic band Jade Fox: keyboard/pianist Nick Ramm, guitarist David Okumu, bassist Tom Herbert and drummer Tom Skinner. Finn has a strong awareness of the balance between improvisation, electronics and contemporary techniques throughout this finely honed acoustic jazz debut. He's one of the best purveyors of the unfairly maligned jazz flute in the UK as well as having a clean, rich-bodied sound on the saxophone. Melodically speaking, the thematic material is often reminiscent of music from western classical right through to eastern folk forms, African and Brazilian. While the significance of rhythm is paramount and demonstrated with patterns deriving from West African music through Afro-Caribbean, and Brazilian music while Finn pulls no punches in his seamless adaptation of contemporary groove music and electronics to an organic, acoustic environment.

ROBERT MITCHELL SOLO

Robert Mitchell [piano]

Born in Essex in 1971, Robert studied at City University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As a graduate of Tomorrow's Warriors and Gary Crosby's Nu Troop, plus award winning funky crossover bands Quite Sane and J-Life, he has forged a formidable reputation as amazingly versatile pianist and composer. It is tempting to compare Robert with Steve Coleman, the saxophonist who began the M-Base group of musicians and who has a major influence on the development of contemporary jazz. But Robert is a very different person whose music is very distinctive. Hence the invitation to play solo in overture to Wayne Shorter and Branford Marsalis concerts. Robert has been nominated twice for BBC Jazz Awards: for Best Newcomer in 2002, and Best New Work in 2003. He has played/recorded with names such as Norma Winstone, Steve Coleman, Courtney Pine, Steve Williamson, Ty, 2 Banks of 4, and IG Culture.

Robert Mitchell is an amazingly versatile pianist and composer, equally at home performing with a quintet in a concert hall as playing with a beat boxer as part of a club night. Indeed his own group Panacea works equally well - with a few changes in material - in a concert setting as well as in a club setting. It is tempting to compare Robert with Steve Coleman, the saxophonist who began the M-Base group of musicians and who has a major influence on the development of contemporary jazz. But Robert is a very different person and his music very distinctive. He was a key member of J-Life which was a very successful band in the 1990s. His own group Panacea combines very intricate and intelligent writing and a strong solos from Tom Mason plus vocals from Deborah Jordan. The music involves intense challenges in rhythmic and harmonic areas, with inspiration from fusion, romantic classical, and experimental music. The last album features songs with contemporary jazz, classical and electronic influences.

Panacea has been invited to play a live Session Broadcasted by Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 1 and performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, in July 2006.

The band was nominated for Session Of The Year (2006 Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards).

ROBERT MITCHELL/OMAR PUENTE DUO

The pair met in 2001 in London. Robert, impressed on hearing the Cuban's ten-piece Raices Cubanas band, invited Omar to join his group, Panacea, on stage for a series of live performances, and to guest on its first CD. This duo collaboration is a relatively recent development but has already included several UK performances as well as visits to Morocco and Belgium, and a celebrated performance at the Havana International Jazz Festival, captured on a 45-minute documentary screened in Cuba. "It's an obvious challenge" says Robert, "just violin and piano filling the stage for a two-set show -but it's exciting! It's an honour to play with Omar, and our similarities (classical music, jazz) work equally as well as our differences (Latin music)". Robert's mercurial playing combined with the forceful playing by Omar Puente sounds gently lyrical at times but with the potential in going into a more rhythmic playing groove based.

Since the release of her self-produced debut album Not Alone in 2005, award-winning soul-folk-jazz singer/songwriter Julia Biel is fast becoming the hip name to drop when talking about new songstresses about to break. The album itself, largely co-written with guitarist Jonny Phillips, won a whole host of rave reviews on its release but it is her captivating live performances that shine brightest. Biel's voice is strong, with a density of tone that makes it arresting. If a number does not move terribly fast, that seems to be because her voice issues forth like a thick curl of smoke, it cannot be rushed. While she gathers new armies of fans, woo-ing audiences across the UK in prestigious venues with her charismatic combination of caramel-dipped yet unvarnished husky tones, highly distinctive songs and easy stage manner, critics have been left digging deep for comparisons for her truly individual and instantly beguiling artistry - 'Billie Holiday meets Bjork' (Jazzwise) with everyone from Tom Waits to Alison Goldfrapp getting a mention in the quest to pin her style down.  Her rapidly rising star has not failed to grab the attention of the industry and she has recently been nominated for the prestigious 'Rising Star' Award in the BBC Jazz Awards 2006. She has previously featured on albums by other F-IRE Collective bands: Polar Bear (debut album 'Dimlit'), Oriole (debut album 'Song for the Sleeping') and most recently, Jonathan Bratoëff's Points of Perception.

TEAK PROJECT

The Teak Project represents a collaboration between three of Britain's finest young improvisers. These musicians have come together simply to make their own music, unfettered by the structures of defined categories like 'jazz' or 'Hindustani classical'. In doing so they have drawn from their own wealth of experiences and created a space in which to let their instruments breathe.

Son of the legendary composer and co-founder of Indo-Jazz Fusions John Mayer, Jonathan Mayer started learning sitar from Clem Alford (the first ever European sitar player) at the age of 16 and later from Subroto Roy Chowdhury of Senia Gharana and Wajahat Khan (direct descendant of Mia Tansen the Great Musician, one of the nine jewels in the Moghul Court of Emperor Akbar). He has played with artists such as Dave Stewart, The Smith String Quartet, The Bingham String Quartet, Kumar Bose, Shiv Shankar Ray, Ashok Dutta, Erich Gruenburg, Rohan De Sarem, The Dub Pistols, John Wilson, Sarah Brightman, I Musici Fiamminghi Orchestra, and Sir Paul McCartney.

Neil Craig has performed in many musical contexts throughout his career, including orchestral, avant-garde and traditional Hindusthani music. After graduating from the Western Australian Conservatorium of Music in Perth, his native city, he played with various orchestras and ensembles worldwide. Trained in Latin percussion, Neil went on to study tabla in Benares, India, and later in London under renowned tabla player, Pandit Sharda Sahai. Neil can be heard on The Christian Garrick Quartet's album FLY 3 and recently toured with the augmented version of this band, the Firewire Ensemble. His third album with Deva is soon to be released.

Upon signing to V2 records the band released their next album Skinny Grin in December 2006 which again received thunderous critical acclaim from Kerrang! to Jazzwise and everyone in between. The emergence of vocals and the appearance of  guests James Chance and Coco Electrik, along with the production of Scott Walker, Paul Epworth and Robert Harder enabled the band to further develop their crossover potential, their single 'Cuts and Lies' receiving much airplay on BBC Radio 6, XFM, playlist on Paris' Radio Nova, and was used in Yves Saint-Laurent's Paris fashion show.

Since Skinny Grin the band have toured and recorded a live album - 'A.L.ive' and are now half way through recording their fourth studio album.
