Winner of the Peter Whittingham Award and thrice-nominated in the BBC Jazz Awards, Tom Arthurs (born 1980) has fast been making a name for himself in the international jazz and improvised music scene.
Tom has been featured on BBC Radio 3's Jazz on 3 both with his own trio,
arthurs.høiby.ritchie, and in duo with pianist John Taylor, with
whom he also appeared at the Electric Proms and the 2007 Bath Festival.
Tom has played at festivals including Berlin, Cheltenham, Bath, London,
Manchester, Moers and Jerusalem and recently participated in the third
edition of the Jerwood/PRS Foundation Take Five Initiative for up-and-coming
creative jazz musicians.
Having released four albums on London independents Babel
and Not Applicable,
Tom is now working on projects with his trio arthurs.høiby.ritchie
(with Jasper Høiby and Stuart Ritchie), pianist Richard
Fairhurst (album 'Mesmer' released in 2007), and various collaborations
with the Not Applicable artists.
Also coming up: a new Berlin-London quintet with Ingrid Laubrock
and Lothar Ohlmeier (reeds), Andreas Willers (guitar) and Rudi
Fischerlehner (drums), as well as a Geneva-based collaborative
project with Nicolas Masson (reeds), Vincent Membrez (Pro-One
synthesiser)
and Alexandre Babel (drums).
Besides his own projects Tom has recently been performing and
recording with Ingrid Laubrock, Richard Fairhurst, Seb Rochford,
John Surman, Max de Wardener, Matthew Bourne, Kenny Wheeler, Chartwell
Dutiro, Tom Rainey, Julie Sassoon, Lothar Ohlmeier, Stéphane
Payen, Nicolas Masson, Mônica Vasconcelos, John Hollenbeck,
JazzXchange Dance and Music Company, electronic music manipulators
Icarus, Pest and Sa-Ra Creative Partners.
Tom is a member of the F-IRE
Collective, and is also one of the Not
Applicable artists.
Tom studied with Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano and Jim Black at Banff
Centre for the Arts (Canada) back in 2001.
