F-ire began as the result of an educational initiative of artists coming together to train and share their knowledge. In the history of F-IRE there have been three community bands mixing professionals and students Akwaaba Orchestra, Sounds of Senegal and the current Rhythms of the City.
F-IRE has run its own week-long creative jazz workshops since 2002, intensive courses in Sabar drumming and dance, funky strings, and no less than 13 international week-ends of samba.
When we have the opportunity, we like to bring appropriate elements of education to complete festivals and touring experience. Often there is an opportunity to present workshops connected to the performances from F-IRE groups.
These have recently included: ˇ ORIOLE and INGRID LAUBROCK WORKSHOPS: During their national tour (Automn 2006), Oriole and Ingrid Laubrock conducted workshops before their performance which enabled the musicians to interact in a different way with audiences. Musicians are given the opportunity to explain their music and therefore make it more accessible, the chance to perform and interact with a younger audience and to get a different angle on your own work which could lead to further artistic development. The workshops have been led in primary schools in Berkshire for regular and special needs schools. ˇ SERIES FOR UNDER 10's/ Wot is Jazz? Wot is Samba? This introduction of the origins of samba and jazz is tailored to suit an audience aged from 6 to 10 years. This workshop have been incorporated in festivals including Bay Festival (Cardiff) and London Jazz Festival. We are currently developing Wot is Salsa? ˇ 'HISTORY OF SAMBA' is a show especially conceived for young audience and families which aims to involve the audience in the show through a dance workshop prior to the performance. ˇ Rhythms of the City, Timeline, Méta Méta have continuously provided singing, drumming, dancing workshops that allow participation in performance. Timeline performed in Skye, Warwickshire and London; Méta Méta in Lybia and London; Rhythms of the City in Ireland, Wales and London.
