Jiri Slavik [bass]
Fred Thomas [piano]
Repose is the first album of Jiri Slavik and Fred Thomas, an acoustic duo (double bass and piano) of two musicians, who met during their studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Inspired by the artistic approach of people like Benoît Delbecq, Mark Dresser or Peter Herbert, their work exhibits a vast degree of influences, ranging from Gamelan and African Music to modern Jazz, Ligeti and Messiaen. In order to enlarge the possibilities of their respective instruments and hence to enrich the sound of their ensemble as a whole, both players use unconventional techniques or physical preparations, which modify the final sound production to a considerable degree and thus create textures of a multi-instrumental nature.
"The textural range of the duo is impressive, and Slavik's arco playing in particular is exemplary; this is music requiring patience and application, but it is rich and original enough to reward both." (Chris Parker, Vortex Review)
